Country star Brad Paisley stopped by The Tonight Show in the midst of his summer tour to talk about his pre-show dodge ball game ritual, hosting the CMA’s and his ageless hot weather hit “Water” from 2010’s American Saturday Night.
But first, host Jimmy Fallon asked Paisley about his new pre-show ritual. The singer explained that he built a garage and put a room above it and when asked what he wanted to do with the empty space, Paisley said he wanted a gym, of course. “And the next thing you know, we put a piece of blue tape across the floor and we were beating each other senseless with dodge balls,” he said.
Fallon then brought up Paisley’s upcoming role as host for the CMA’s In November. “The way we prepare really is to just look around at what’s funny and try to come up with — but there’s nothing,” said Paisley, who will be hosting for an eleventh time alongside Carrie Underwood at the Nov. 14 show. Given Underwood’s surprise announcement on Thursday (Aug. 9) that she’s pregnant with her second child, Paisley might just have gotten some fresh material.
The host also asked Paisley about playing unreleased songs during his live show, so the singer pulled out a guitar and started to play what appeared to be a sweet song about first love… with a surprise twist ending. With a straight face, Paisley sang, “First date, first kiss/ First taste of loving/ you were my first cousin,” and “We got in bog trouble/ with your dad, my uncle/ Cause you were my first cousin” as Fallon and the audience burst out laughing.
And then it was time for Paisley and his signature cowboy hat to move on over to the stage for a performance of his 2010 hit track “Water.” The singer and his band played the uplifting about Paisley’s memories involving water, including playing in a kiddie pool as child, jumping from rope swings into a river, spring break wet t-shirt contests and skinny dipping with his girlfriend.
