Minneapolis native Dessa has made a name for herself as quite the experimental musician. The genre-blending songwriter has been creating tunes on all spectrums of music, from working with the Grammy-winning Minnesota Orchestra, to crafting blistering lyrical raps.
With her upcoming full-length debut album Chime set for release on Feb. 23, Dessa shares a taste of what’s to come with the visual for her lush, emotional single “Good Grief” today (Jan. 25). The track narrates through the struggles of dealing with a quarrel in a relationship. Dessa’s jumps between a pacy lyrical flow and some ethereal melodic vocals over the songs’ solemn chords, warm subtle bass line, and oozing background synths. “They say there’s good grief, but how can you tell it from the bad?” croons the singer.
The Mercies May-directed visual sees Dessa and her partner traversing through a wintery road, in complete silence, barely exchanging looks at each other. Amid the clear tension, the snow-covered town reflects the mood of the tune. The two ultimately end up watching an outdoor fan fire, and through the warmth, finally connect by holding each other’s hand.
“It’s usually only after we’ve recovered from a big hurt that we start to cast the experience as formative, curative, or character-building,” Dessa told Billboard. “In real time, pain just sucks. After wading through a bout of heartache, I drafted a set of lyrics expressing the hope that I might salvage something from the experience.”
She continued, “To just be moping or suffering seemed like an indefensible waste of time, of energy, of my life–I wanted to at least find myself improved, the way that fire can fortify steel, or melt sand into clear glass. In the video, I depict one-half of a couple alienated from one another. In the dramatic imagery of the final scenes, there’s no melodramatic embrace, but there’s a truce, a peace, a small gesture of affection — and that’s enough.”
Dessa will also be embarking on the first leg of her worldwide ‘Chime’ tour with appearances from MONKAR on the albums release day.
