Tech in 2017: Crazy, troubled and out of control?

There’s no doubt about it, it’s been a difficult year for the technology industry. It’s also been a crazy year for tech, with cryptocurrencies surging and rollercoastering in value — presumably minting a few millionaires along the way, assuming they actually cashed their coin out. Yet even those strange crypto-highs have come with some equal and opposite lows: Scams, hacks, pointlessly wasteful energy consumption, and — zooming out — the baffled confusion of anyone outside the crypto-boom trying to understand what logic (if any) it runs on. Meanwhile AI’s touted efficiency gains have also been weighed down by counternarratives this year — the stories where AI is shown preferring to promote clickbait. Or to be biased. Or worse. AI blowing “bubbles of hate” as one YouTube policy staffer memo...

The strike secured a third consecutive home league win for Kilmarnock, for the first time in almost 10 years. This had the feeling of a pretty even contest right from the start – Kilmarnock looking dangerous and resilient under Steve Cla...

Dogged Everton hold Chelsea to extend unbeaten run to six

Phil Jagielka cleared off the line twice in quick succession in the first half Everton boss Sam Allardyce challenged his side to be more creative as he continued his unbeaten start as manager with a dogged and defensively strong goalless draw against champions Chelsea. The ninth-placed Toffees have now not lost in six Premier League games, five of those since Allardyce took charge. Captain Phil Jagielka cleared off the line from Tiemoue Bakayoko and Willian in quick succession to frustrate the visitors, who were without suspended top scorer Alvaro Morata. Chelsea dominated, but struggled to breach the Everton back line and found goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in good form when they did. The 23-year-old England World Cup hopeful saved smartly from Pedro’s effort in the first half and tipp...

The identity politics of emoji

Welcome back to CTRL+T, TechCrunch’s latest weekly podcast in which Megan Rose Dickey and I pick the stories we thought were interesting enough to talk to you about. This week we wondered if cell phones can adversely affect your health (or kill you), the goggles of Magic Leap and the problem Twitter has with the hateful people on its platform. Then later in the ep, Megan chats up Jeremy Burge, the Aussie founder of Emojipedia. Importantly, they talk about whether the plural of “emoji” is “emoji” or “emojis.” You know you’ve been wondering. They also discussed the need for a pedia for emoji, Simpsons yellow and the skin-shade politics of mobile communication. “Having things skewed heavily toward white men is a weird keyboard — that’s not cool,” he says. It’s complicated.
