Naked Labs raises $14M Series A led by Founders Fund for its 3D body scanning mirror

When it comes to measuring your fitness progress, there’s only so much your weight scale can tell you, actually there’s only one thing it can convey. That one metric hardly encapsulates all of the successes that active people are looking to achieve. Naked Labs believes that body shape is a more important thing to measure and they’ve begun shipping their body-scanning mirror that builds a 3D model of users and alerts them where progress is being made and where there’s potential for more work to be done. The startup also announced today that it has raised a $14 million Series A led by Founders Fund. Also participating were NEA, Lumia Capital, Venture 51, Seabed VC, among others. The company began taking pre-orders last year for its $1,395 Naked 3D Fitness Tracker. It’s already started shippi...

Kayla Itsines’ Sweat app will rake in $77 million this year

In earlier years, fitness gurus would market their programs for getting in shape on VHS tapes and, later, DVDs. These days, it’s an app business. At Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference this week in San Jose, the company brought in one of the fitness app industry’s superstars, Kayla Itsines, co-creator of the BBG (Bikini Body Guides) and the Sweat app – which will pull in $77 million USD this year – to lead a morning workout for around 200 conference attendees. For Apple, Kayla’s brand represents not only a good App Store success story, but also spreads the message of how its own products, like iPhone and Apple Watch, enable access to better health through their platforms. From e-books to apps Kayla’s fitness company was started several years ago by two personal trainers – herself and bu...

ClassPass introduces credits

ClassPass is not accustomed to sitting idle. The startup, a subscription marketplace that lets users find and book fitness classes, is today introducing credits. ClassPass CEO Fritz Lanman hinted at the change at Disrupt SF last year, explaining that the service has a great market fit with a certain demographic, but doesn’t work as well for people who want more value for their money. Before now, ClassPass users were able to sign up for a 3-class, 5-class or 10-class monthly membership. While pricing for those memberships changes based on geography, there was no way to differentiate between a super luxurious indoor Flywheel cycling class (more expensive) and a basic yoga class at a gym (less expensive). A la carte, the prices for those classes would be very different, but ClassPass still co...
