To Save Democracy, This Economist Wants to Kill Its Core Principle

It’s hard sometimes not to despair for the future of democracies. Voters can be tribal and poorly informed. Last year the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania surveyed 1,013 U.S. adults and found that only a quarter could name all three branches of government (executive, legislative, and judicial). A third couldn’t name any. Dambisa Moyo has had that same sinking feeling. But unlike you, she wrote a book about it. In Edge of Chaos: Why Democracy Is Failing to Deliver Economic Growth—and How to Fix It, she argues that the public is too shortsighted to choose economic policies that will produce long-term prosperity. “Political myopia is the central obstacle on the path of growth in advanced economies,” she writes. Readers are likely to find themselves nodding alo...

West Should Rediscover Its ‘Democratic Mojo,’ David Cameron Says

Western countries need to “mount a fightback” against the rise of populism that’s led to Brexit and the election of Donald Trump, David Cameron said in one of his first media appearances since he quit as British prime minister. “I think we need to rediscover our democratic mojo in the West and be proud of the fact that we are real democracies,” he told reporters Thursday at a briefing in Washington, where he’s launching a report on how countries can improve the way they provide aid to unstable governments like Libya and Afghanistan. “The truth is you only truly defeat corruption if you have a system that has all those elements of real democracy and I think we need to mount a bit of a fightback to emphasize that these things are not democratic nice-to-haves for a strong society, but are act...

Chris Christie’s Official Portrait to Cost $85,000

Trenton, N.J. (AP) — Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s official portrait will cost $85,000, which is more than taxpayers shelled out for paintings of his three predecessors combined. The Record reports that Australian artist Paul Newton will paint the portrait of the Republican who left office after eight years in January. The cost detail was obtained through an open records request. Democrats Jon Corzine, Richard Codey and Jim McGreevey spent a combined $74,500 for theirs. None served for two terms. The Christie painting will likely be more formal than one of his best known images of him after he was photographed sitting on a beach closed to the public due to a budget stalemate last year. Christie appreciated luxury, watching the Dallas Cowboys from owner Jerry JonesR...

Most of the 222 rhinos killed for their horn in South Africa’s eastern ...

Curtain Falls Cuba’s Castro Era With Selection of New President

Miguel Diaz-Canel took over as Cuba’s president Thursday, moving quickly to downplay expectations of change in an island ruled by the Castro family for six decades. “The mandate given by the people to this legislature is the continuity of the revolution,”’ Diaz-Canel told the National Assembly. The former vice president said he would lead “with the conviction that all Cubans will be faithful to the legacy of the Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro.” Looking over his shoulder to make sure he sticks to that mandate is former President Raul Castro, who will remain as head of the Communist Party, the ultimate source of power on the Caribbean Island. That may tie the hands of Diaz-Canel as he tries to deal with the biggest economic crisis on the island since the collapse of the Soviet Union in the ...
