How Gowon broke one north

By Emeka Obasi Politics  throws itself up in various forms leaving those who think they are professional politicians losing out without realising their place in the new order until it becomes way too late. I must give General Yakubu Gowon credit for doing what most Nigerians found difficult to do in the past. Gowon dealt a devastating blow to  regional politics and got away with it. And he ruled the country for  nine years; one third of it was during the Civil War which pitched the nation against the Eastern Region. Gen. Gowon Following the counter coup of July 29, 1966, Gowon, then 32 and Army Chief, became Head of State against the wishes of some of his colleagues especially those from the Eastern region. At a time, Lt. Col. Murtala Mohammed, who led the plotters want...

By Soni Daniel, Northern Region Editor As the fireworks for and against the current Women Affairs Minister, Senator Aisha Alhassan,  for declaring support for former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, while serving Buhari, continue, former Presidential Adviser, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, has said that Nigerians should commend her for having the courage to speak the truth rather than deceive the president. EMERGE 2017: House on the Rock showcases rare talents

By Sam Eyoboka This year’s Spirit Life Conference of the House On The Rock Church, which was held from Wednesday August 23 to Sunday August 27 was indeed a watershed. From its array of distinguished speakers, such as    the world famous preacher, Bishop T.D. Jakes, music icon, Donnie McClurkin as well as the daily spicing of insightful scriptures and the crowd of enthusiastic worshippers, the annual conference truly lived up to its billings. The auditorium of this elegant edifice was jammed on all floors, the crowd spilling unto    adjoining streets and corners. This was not totally surprising given a number of factors: life was involved, so was music and dance, irresistible icings on the cake of any event requiring massive attendance.td-jakes-osinbajo. True Federalism will kick out corruption

By Morenike Taire Differences between reforms and restructuring are not only coarse but obvious for all to see; yet they appear completely lost within the unwholesome din of the latest restructuring discourse in the country today. Reasons for this are not farfetched, and are basically due to the present ethnicist contexts that have come to the fore in more recent times. There is now Yorubaland, Igbo country, South south and Arewa. Nigeria is now somewhere in the back ground, a place in which we all reside but which we completely loathe. This Nigeria has nothing to do with us but is the sole construct of the white man beginning from the amalgamation of 1914. It is the one that signs deals with international oil companies and greedily pockets proceeds from such deals. It...

Dancing can reverse signs of brain ageing

Physical exercise has an anti-aging effect on the hippocampus region of the brain — an area that controls memory, learning and balance. A new study, comparing different forms of exercise — dancing and endurance training — undertaken by elderly volunteers for 18 months, shows that both can have an anti-aging effect on the brain, but only dancing corresponded to a noticeable difference in behaviour. This difference is attributed to the extra challenge of learning dancing routines. As we grow older we suffer a decline in mental and physical fitness, which can be made worse by conditions like Alzheimer’s disease. But older people who routinely partake in physical exercise can reverse the signs of aging in the brain, and dancing has the most profound effect. “Exercise has t...

In a landmark four-year trial, scientists found that the drug – given by injection every three months – cut the risk of heart attacks by a quarter. The 10,000-patient study, involving 1,000 doctors in 39 countries, also suggested it could halve the risk of dying from lung cancer and prevent arthritis and gout. Heart Scientists last night said the treatment marked ‘a new era of therapeutics’ that could save thousands of lives. The drug, Canakinumab, works by reducing inflammation – a major new approach in heart medicine. For the past 30 years cholesterol-busting statins have been given to nearly all people deemed to be at risk of cardiovascular disease in a bid...
