POPULAR Nollywood actresses and actors, including Omotola jalade-Ekeinede, Genevieve Nnaji, Rita Dominic, Omoni Oboli, Ramsey Nouah, Stephanie Okereke-Linus, among others, were conspiciously missing at the opening ceremony of this year’s Africa International Film Festival, AFRIFF, which held Sunday night, at the Genesis Deluxe Cinemas, The Palms, Lekki, Lagos. Weightlifting would be held at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall under the city’s plans The Commonwealth Games Federation raised “170 detailed queries” when deeming Birmingham’s bid for the 2022 event non-compliant, but organisers remain “quietly confident” of hosting. Birmingham’s was the only bid before a 30 September deadline, which has now been extended until 30 November. No new bids have yet been announced. Frankel won all 14 of his races before being retired in 2012 A date with one of sport’s hottest properties just got an an awful lot more expensive. Legendary racehorse Frankel already commanded a stud fee of £125,000, but that will rise by 40% to £175,000 next year. Since retirement from the track five years ago, he has sired a string of winners, including Cracksman in Ascot’s Champion Stakes earlier this month. Frankel is based in Newmarket as part of the Juddmonte breeding operation. “He’s doing phenomenally well and is right up there with the best horses,” said Banstead Manor Stud director Simon Mockridge. Dominant Van Niekerk defends 400m title South Africa’s Wayde van Niekerk will miss the 2018 Commonwealth Games after suffering a knee ligament injury during a celebrity touch rugby game. Van Niekerk, the 400m world and Olympic champion, was planning on competing in the 100m and 200m in Australia. Man City and Napoli players posed for photographs together before their match on 17 October Manchester City fans will not be allowed to wear belts inside the Stadio San Paolo for Wednesday night’s Champions League game against Napoli. The decision follows trouble around the two clubs’ meeting in Manchester a fortnight ago. A Napoli fan has been jailed for five months for his part in an attack in a pub near City’s Etihad Stadium where belts were used as weapons. The ban affects fans from both sides and will be in place in the stadium.
