Unless a “big opportunity” arises, Arsenal boss Unai Emery says he won’t feel the need to make any further summer signings. Mesut Ozil will report back to Arsenal in time for their preseason trip to Singapore, head coach Unai Emery has confirmed. Ozil has been on holiday since Germany were knocked out in the group stage at the World Cup, but will join the rest of the Arsenal squad before they travel to Asia this weekend. Nigeria international Alex Iwobi and Egypt’s Mohamed Elneny should also be back by then. “All the players are the same,” Emery told the Arsenal website. “They have the same holidays. I know Iwobi, Elneny and Mesut Ozil. He’s coming with us to Singapore the first day.” Arsenal face Atletico Madrid on July 26 and then pla...

Arsenal caught up in fraud case involving Chinese partner, carmaker BYD

By Mattias Karen, Arsenal correspondent Unless a “big opportunity” arises, Arsenal boss Unai Emery says he won’t feel the need to make any further summer signings. Arsenal have been caught up in a suspected fraud involving one of its Chinese partners, electric carmaker BYD, with the company claiming that the person who signed a sponsorship deal with the club was not authorised to do so. BYD signed a contract with Arsenal in April to become the club’s official car and bus partner, but that deal is among several that involved a person who is now being investigated by police in Shanghai. BYD claims the person was never an employee of the company and was not authorised to sign contracts with advertising partners on its behalf. Arsenal issued a statement on their Chinese...

Arsenal begin Unai Emery era with 8-0 friendly win over Boreham Wood

LONDON — Arsenal defender Calum Chambers thinks he can grow into the holding midfield role after being deployed in a new position in Unai Emery’s first game in charge of the Gunners. Chambers played as a defensive midfielder in the second half of Arsenal’s 8-0 win over Boreham Wood on Saturday after Emery made wholesale changes at half-time. With Arsenal having just signed Lucas Torreira to fill the holding midfield role — and with the likes of Mohamed Elneny and Granit Xhaka also yet to return from World Cup duty — Chambers is unlikely to see much time in that position this coming season. But the centre-back said Emery has indicated that it could be a possibility. “Yeah, the manager spoke to me about the position. And yes, it’s a new one for me,&#...

Arsenal boss Unai Emery to work with playmaker Mesut Ozil ‘in a new way’

Unless a “big opportunity” arises, Arsenal boss Unai Emery says he won’t feel the need to make any further summer signings. LONDON — Arsenal boss Unai Emery says he will work with Mesut Ozil “in a new way” to get the best out of the playmaker, and urged him to come back from his holiday with “a good mentality” despite Germany’s World Cup fiasco. Ozil has been criticised in Germany following the team’s exit in the group stage in Russia, both for his performances on the pitch and for posing for a photo with Turkey president Recep Erdogan before the tournament. Ozil’s mental toughness has often been questioned in England after inconsistent performances for Arsenal as well. And asked how he will help the midfielder get over his ...

Arsenal boss Unai Emery wouldn’t guarantee Jack Wilshere starting spot

Unless a “big opportunity” arises, Arsenal boss Unai Emery says he won’t feel the need to make any further summer signings. LONDON — Arsenal boss Unai Emery has confirmed that he couldn’t offer Jack Wilshere a regular starting role for next season, and said he respects the midfielder’s decision to leave the club. Wilshere joined West Ham this week after turning down a new-contract offer at Arsenal, the club he spent 17 years at after joining the academy as a boy. Wilshere, 26, said last month that he made the decision after a one-to-one conversation with Emery, in which the new head coach indicated he wouldn’t be a regular starter. Emery gave his own version of that conversation ahead of his first game in charge of the Gunners, a preseason friendly...
